| As ISPs choke file-sharing, users look elsewhere
RapidShare and MegaUpload are among the most used file-hosting services. Together, the two sites account for 9 percent of all Internet traffic in the Middle East and 4 percent in Germany, according to iPoque, a company based in Leipzig, Germany, that specializes in traffic-management appliances for ISPs. The percentages are significant since over the last year usage of file-sharing sites, which number in the dozens, has surged, said Klaus Mochalski, iPoque's CEO. The sites offer potentially faster download speeds for sharing files than peer-to-peer networks. "These Web pages are tremendously popular," Mochalski said. The services let users upload a file and then share a link, called a direct download link, in e-mails and Web forums for others to download the content.

Malware writers exploring Software as a Service model
The business of writing, buying, and selling malware has become increasingly commercial over the past few years, but a new report from online security firm Finjan sheds light on just how mainstream the crimeware business has gone. Earlier this month, the company discovered a small, standalone application gathering data on over 8,700 servers, including web sites from 2,500 North American companies and a handful of sites in Alexa's top 100 ranking. Potential buyers were able to log into the malicious server hosting the data-gathering service and evaluate any given web site's size and Google Page Rank to decide whether or not the site's FTP information was worth purchasing or not. The concept of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is nothing new, but this is the first time anyone has organized the purchase of FTP login credentials, with additional tools available to help a buyer confirm he's making a smart purchase.

The NFL Network wants to be placed on digital basic cable with all customers paying about 60 to 70 cents a month for it. Time Warner wants to offer the network on a surcharged sports tier available to subscribers who pay extra for it.
The network has rejected Time Warner's offer to let the network charge a fee for the games that would be passed on to customers.

Today, Kidd Island Bay is filling up with sediment from all the subdivisions. But happily, no one has figured out how to put a house on Kidd Island. In the old days, the few brave souls who lived on the bay could skate across the lake to the town movie theater. The theater is gone now, and the lake doesn't freeze like it used to, so everyone has a satellite dish. As a Camp Fire Girl, my wife used to earn beads by making the half-mile swim to Kidd Island and back from Camp Neewahlu. The camp closed a few years ago. The Camp Fire Girls sold it for $2 million to former NYPD Blue star Dennis Franz, confirming everybody's suspicion that no matter what Giuliani says, anybody who cared that much about crime would leave New York City and move to Idaho. Giuliani raised $50-100,000 in Coeur d'Alene.

I voted for a black man in the Republican primary in 2000. I voted for Alan Keyes, because he had the character, intelligence, knowledge and experience to make a great president. I would've voted for him again this year, had he chosen to run. Perhaps if the Republican Party wises up this year they'll get McCain to have Keyes run as V.P. There will be a black president in America before long, but it won't be Obama. It will be a black conservative Republican who runs and wins on the strength of his character, ideas and experience. .

It's the stories we tell each other for amusement and social bonding. I'm skeptical about assigning purpose to an artistic phenomenon, because it's something that, at bottom, we do for fun and communication. (When used for communication it may be used with serious intent, but that's far from being the main purpose of most SF.) Having said that, I do believe it's possible to insert interesting messages in fiction, and because fiction is viewed as a recreational activity this makes it possible to get them across to people who might not otherwise be receptive. It's called propaganda, and it can be used for political, social or religious purposes (for example, C.S. Lewis's Narnia books were explicitly conceived of as vehicles for Christian theology targeted at children of an impressionable age).
